Tom's Thoughts On Digital Night Vision Binoculars

Being able to see things at night has always intrigued me. I'm amazed by how they work and the fact that the general public can now buy quality night vision goggles and binoculars.

Digital night vision binoculars allow outdoorsy people to see in the dark and even take videos and photos. These digital devices convert incoming light into an electronic signal via a CMOS sensor and then give you an enhanced image on an LCD screen.

I have taken CIGMAN CNVPRO night vision binoculars out into the mountains around my home here in the French Alps to put them through their paces.

    First Impressions of CIGMAN CNVPRO

When the CIGMAN CNVPROs arrived, I was pretty excited to try them out. I haven't had much experience with modern versions and was wondering what they'd be like. For example, did they actually work?, If they did, how good would they be? Will they be super heavy?

The box is well-made and arrived in perfect condition, with the binoculars, accessories, and instructions neatly placed and secure. After unboxing them, I headed into my backyard and switched them on. The first shock I got was how good they were in the default setting. I could see the green of all the trees very well and with lots of detail.

I probably should have read the instructions first, but I decided to just play with the easy-to-reach buttons and see what happened. The monochrome setting that uses an infrared light was exceptional. It provided lots of detail, and I could see the outlines of the mountains in front of the stars. I got more excited when I pointed them at my dog, who had joined me in the backyard, as it showed the potential for seeing wildlife very clearly.

    How I Tested The Binoculars?

A quick play with the binoculars in my backyard wasn't going to cut it. I wanted to really test the performance of the CIGMAN CNVPRO night vision binoculars. My backyard isn't very big, so I walked around the dark rural setting in which I live and drove up into the mountains in the hope of seeing some wildlife. By doing so, I hoped to check CNVPROs clarity at different ranges and in different lighting conditions.

It's all very well seeing things in the dark, but you often want proof of what you've seen. So the next test was to take some photos and videos and see how they turned out.

As with a lot of technology, user-friendliness is important. With this in mind, I tested how easy the CNVPROs are to live with and use. This includes using the controls, ergonomics, and battery life.

    Lighting Conditions

My first outing with the CNVPRO night vision goggles provided challenging conditions, ideal for seeing how they performed. It was nearly pitch black, as the sky was becoming cloudy, and there were a few lights on in the apartment building behind me.

I initially started with the binoculars in the mode that shows colour. This brought up the lights of the village in the valley below me, showing reasonably good detail. I could also see the green of the trees that were just across the road and could pick out individual branches and leaves after tweaking the focus.

(All images have been compressed for faster loading and may appear slightly less sharp, though they remain true to life. All photos and videos were taken handheld, without a tripod.)

Pointing the binoculars skyward towards the tops of the mountains on the other side of the valley wasn't as successful in this mode. The image became grainy with an almost purple hue. But switching to infrared changed this.

The 4 different levels of infrared allowed me to pick out the outline of the mountains and stars among the broken clouds. I found that looking into the far distance, the image was still a bit grainy, but I didn't expect it to be crystal clear, as it was asking a lot of the sensor. We also need to bear in mind that it was my first proper try with the binoculars and I'm still learning how to use them.

I then decided to walk around in the hope of seeing some wildlife. We often have deer and wild boar running around. The first field I came to was empty, but I could see the small derelict barn and trees in the colour setting, and this was helped by the small streetlight behind me. If some deer were roaming around the field, I could've gotten some good colour photos and videos of them.

To see how the CNVPRO coped with total darkness, I walked to another field away from the main road, another hotspot for deer. Unfortunately, all I managed to capture was a photo of a lost frog hopping in front of me. But this was actually a good test. Colour mode didn't work in total darkness because, understandably, it requires more light to function. The torch built into the binoculars helps with this, but it would probably scare away something like a deer.

Determined to capture some nighttime wildlife footage, I went for a drive to places where I have seen deer in the past. I took my dog, Reggie, so I had at least some kind of animal to capture if I didn't see anything. After visiting a couple of different places, I was in luck!

A family of deer was lying down in a forest clearing just about visible from the road. They were quite a distance away, and there were some tree branches in the foreground. I used the digital zoom to get a closer look. Although the image was slightly grainy at high zoom, I could see the deer pretty clearly and took both video and photos.

On my way home, I stopped off by the side of a field in one last ditched attempt at seeing some wildlife. I was in luck again. Two deer were walking across the field, and I managed to capture some photos and video before they ran off. This time, there was some long grass in the foreground, but the field was open. It was a balancing act of trying not to scare off the deer while trying to see past the grass. Nevertheless, I could see the deer in the pitch black.

    Clarity

As I mentioned above, clarity depends on the mode you're in and how much light there is. You need some light to see things in colour, so a full moon or clear night would be best. However, this mode is best suited to seeing things that are relatively close or at a medium distance, ideal for wildlife spotting.

During my test, light fog started drifting in front of me. This obscured the image in colour mode, but the infrared cut through, allowing me to see down a very dark road.

By tweaking the focus and ensuring you're in the best mode for the conditions, you can capture pretty clear images and video. The zooming function is effective, but you lose some definition the closer you zoom in. Simply hold down the + to zoom in and - to zoom out. I found it tricky to keep the binoculars still when zoomed in, but resting them on a fence helped steady my shaky hands. But this is the case with all cameras when zoomed in.

    Photo and Video

Once you have your CNVPRO night vision binoculars set up for the conditions, you can take photos and videos of what you're looking at. The default setting is video, and an easy double click of a button puts cycles it into photo mode or the gallery. Video and photo quality are pretty much what you see through the viewfinder, so you know what to expect. I found that taking a screenshot of key points of videos is an easy way of getting good photos without changing modes and missing something good.

    User-Friendliness

Something like this has to be user-friendly, especially when you're fumbling around in the dark trying to be quiet. The CNVPRO's ergonomics are well designed as they fit in your hands well while giving you easy access to the buttons on the top. You just need to learn which button does what for a seamless user experience.

The CNVPRO night vision binoculars are pretty large, and understandably so, but no more cumbersome than a decent SLR camera. They come with a thick neck strap, which I recommend using. They also come with an SD card, data cable, a microfibre cloth, and a compass. All of which help you get the most out of your binoculars.

A surprisingly useful feature is the built-in torch. After looking through the viewfinder, your eyes struggle to adapt to the dark, so the torch helps you to find your way.

The menu shows up in the viewfinder and is pretty self-explanatory. Simply use the + and - buttons to scroll through each setting. However, I recommend you choose the best settings before you head out looking for wildlife. This is because pressing the buttons makes an audible beeping noise. In my panic, trying to film the deer in the field, I forgot to turn off the beeps, which I think scared the deer away.

What Is The CIGMAN CNVPRO Night Vision Binoculars?

    CIGMAN CNVPRO appearance

The CNVPRO has a complicated-looking spec sheet, but all the features mean that the CNVPRO is designed to let you see and record what happens after dark. The high-end Sony sensor means the camera gathers more light and produces clearer pictures in dim conditions. The device can even display vivid colour scenes during dusk by utilising ambient light from the stars or the moon. When it gets too dark, you can switch on its built-in infrared lamp, an 850-nm LED that shines a faint red glow to illuminate far-off subjects, giving you long-distance visibility without being too noticeable.

The lens has a very wide aperture (F0.8), which allows plenty of light in for brighter images. What I'm especially interested in is the fact that these binoculars also capture high‑resolution still photos (up to 52 MP) and 4 K video. They have an AI-based image processor that helps clean up low-light video by reducing noise and balancing bright and dark areas. For zooming, the CNVPRO offers 2× optical magnification and up to 8× digital zoom, which enlarges the picture by cropping and can make it look softer.

A built‑in microphone records sound along with the video, adding context to your nighttime observations. Finally, the device is designed for outdoor use, with a long-lasting battery and a rugged, weather-resistant housing that keeps out dust and splashes. The idea is to use the CNVPRO when you're watching wildlife, camping, or simply exploring your backyard at night.

    Tom's Final Thoughts and Verdict

Although I'm a bit out of touch with modern night vision tech, I'm impressed with the CIGMAN CNVPRO night vision binoculars. I believe that with some practice and a good understanding of how to select the correct settings for your specific circumstances, you can capture some fantastic nature photos and footage.

I intend to use the CIGMAN CNVPRO night vision binoculars more in the future, and they will undoubtedly be a part of my nighttime mountain adventures.

    Suggestions From The CIGMAN Team

For under 300 USD, we truly believe the CNVPRO is the best digital night vision device you can get. We would not feel confident offering a three-year warranty if the quality was not there.

At the same time, we want to be upfront with you. Everyone has different expectations of quality. If you are hoping for something that can give you the same results as an optical camera in complete darkness, then the CNVPRO is not for you. In fact, even military devices that cost close to ten thousand dollars cannot achieve that. To be very honest, nothing on the market can.

If what you need is a tactical military-grade device, this is not the right choice either, unless you only want it as a backup or you are just curious to try it out. In that case, go ahead, because the CNVPRO really does deliver impressive quality for what it is.

If you are looking for invisible infrared night vision, we have to say no again. The CNVPRO is built for consumers. To upgrade it with that function, the price would have to be at least twice as much.

    Who We Recommend It For

We strongly recommend the CNVPRO for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. It is not meant to replace a professional camera, but it is perfect if you want to capture photos or videos while night running, hiking, camping, climbing, or even hunting.

The three-inch screen gives you an experience that feels closer to four inches thanks to optical magnification. I will share more details in a future blog. If you have a tripod, then the CNVPRO becomes even better, especially for still shots.

As for the weight, the CNVPRO is just about two pounds, which is about the same as carrying three to four iPhones. That makes it fairly lightweight and easy to take with you.

We are not going to claim it performs like an optical camera, unless you are after that retro look. But at this price, as a night vision device, it is a lot of fun and a great way to record moments with your friends and family.
